The lake wasn’t crowded that day, even though the temperature hovered around ninety. And it was humid—a steamy, dripping scorcher of a day, when the only thing that mattered was keeping cool.

There were small knots of people scattered around the lakefront. They lay unmoving in the sun as if immobilized by her rays, but the three of us opted for the semi-shade of a scrubby ash tree. We too were motionless, feeling the sweat trickle down our bodies.
