Firstly, a quick thanks to everyone who sends me emails about my reviews with comments, anecdotes or recommendations on what I should review next. I read them all, and like on this occasion, I do follow through on some of those suggestions.
TEW reader David HJ from Belleview Heights believes that Vivid’s 2000 release Seven Deadly Sins is amongst the best adult films ever made. He feels it was one of the first porn movies that placed equal emphasise on style and storyline over straight out sex, setting the tone for many of the films made today that blend mainstream appeal amongst the fucking, hence it should stand as an important film in XXX folklore. That’s a big claim, and it was certainly enough to pique my interest.
Vivid studios are notorious for their hit or miss productions. Like Forrest Gump’s famous box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. So often they blow great ideas with poor production or outdated set-ups, or vice versa.
With Seven Deadly Sins, however, they did hit a home run.
The film is comprised of seven individual scenes, each based around one of the biblical seven deadly sins. It’s a unique concept which presented Director Robyn Dyer with some fantastic creative opportunities. There were several highlights.
The sin of Lust sees nymphomaniac Candy Hall fantasising over everybody and anybody she meets, from a guy at the store and the girl in the drive-thru window. I got a kick out of the brief fantasy scenes where we get to see what’s happening in the mind of Candy as she goes about her day; it sets the scene up well, fleshes out her character and gives us some nice sensual action which will definitely help warm you up.
The crescendo is a fabulous gangbang, where Candy ably takes on three studs in multiple positions and combinations in front of an approving audience. Great action and good energy help give the scene a very solid payoff, and the triple teaming climax provides a satisfying conclusion. If you enjoy themes of unleashed group sex and voyeurism, this will definitely work for you. The fantasy flashes work a treat to help build the tension.
Anger is the next sin which gains a very solid tick of approval for quality action. The ever-suave James Bonn returns home to discover his wife Azlea riding the cock of another man, yet despite his rage at her infidelity, he is the one on the receiving end of a hate-filled and humiliating tirade from her.
What I especially like about this scene is the believability in the anger; both Bonn and Azlea really seem to get into it. From the moment he grabs her by the hair and thrusts her down for some forceful oral to keep her quiet, til the moment he responds on her in kind, followed by powerful doggy-style fucking, both players keep up their venomous down-talking to each other, and this adds fuel to a very well played out scene. Lots of fury and intensity in the action.
The sin of Pride finds the sultry Veronica modelling for a photographer in a park. She meets yummy blonde Ava and her boyfriend Johnny and before long we are treated to a spectacular threesome in a room full of mirrors. Ava’s reverse cowgirl is an absolute treat, while Veronica is a scream as her over-the-top arrogance plays up to the Pride theme beautifully. She is the focus of the scene, and steals the show with her erotic egotism.
I particularly loved the artistic dynamic of Pride, with the surrounding mirrors working a wonderful effect and providing delicious angles and multiples views of the threeway action. Great chemistry between the players is a feature, highlighted by a mouth-watering kiss between Veronica and Ava, and the aforementioned wild reverse cowgirl action. Good combination fucking cranks up the heat and keeps the scene cooking until the end.
My favourite scene of the film, however, is found in Sloth (“how apt”, people who know me may be thinking!). Regan plays the part of an absolute slob, both in her appearance and living conditions. She answers the add of Devin in true Deuce Bigalow tradition and, once he gets past his disgust, we are treated to a frenzied romp as we see “inner” Regan living out her fantasy, leaving “outer” Regan to her own devices. Excellent missionary, doggy style and cowgirl action provides a sexual feast between two talented performers.
I don’t want to give too much of this scene away, other than to say is extremely funny and brilliantly conceived. Great action compliments a very unique set-up, and the result is a memorable piece of XXX. Robyn Dyer struck gold here, well done to all concerned!
The other scenes in the movie are also very solid entertainment and highly enjoyable, but they play a supporting role to the standouts. I’m not a big fan of food fight orgies, as we see in Gluttony, and I thought Janine seemed off her game in Envy. Greed is an excellent example of an all-in foursome, but I’ve never been a big fan of Michael Cox, he’s simply never pushed my buttons.
Vivid provides Seven Deadly Sins with a very good level of production, complementing an enjoyable soundtrack (it does go off the rails at a couple of points however) with more than serviceable film quality. Excellent direction, clever editing and some top quality performances make for an overall excellent package.
The only small problem I have with the movie is something that Vivid are also widely know for, and that is the presence of too much “manufactured” beauty, and especially too many fake breasts. The girls are all naturally beautiful, but Vivid has its’ own taste in what female actors should look like which, just in my opinion, takes away slightly from the overall appeal. Only a minor point though…I’m still a little feminist with my porn point of views.
Overall, Seven Deadly Sins lives up to the kudos that David HJ gives it, thanks for the tip!
