“You’ve got to be f*cking kidding me!” was the response from fellow adult film connoisseur Arlene when I ranked Pure Bliss in my top ten XXX flicks of all time. Arlene, sweetheart, this review is for you.

I am not going to pretend that Pure Bliss is on the level of, say, a “Corruption” (see previous review). I’m not that silly, and I know full well I would lose any argument along those lines. In terms of production, acting, sex and script it was good at the time but in comparison to some of today’s standards it looks like what it is – a low budget couples orientated porno. Albeit quite a very good one.

What I love about this flick, however, was that it is the “breakout” (of sorts) movie for Temptress and Cheyenne Silver. Both had made films before, but in this movie we get to see their full range of talents and potential. I know Temptress hasn’t really gone on to great heights since then (and I’m not sure why…maybe a reluctance to go a little more hardcore might be limiting her work options) but Cheyenne Silver has, and on a side not, what makes this movie very, very meaningful to me is that it marked my first girl crush on Cheyenne (AKA Cara Ballou, who know produces mainstream television shows).

The story of Pure Bliss revolves around struggling writer Temptress having to pen some erotic stories at the request of her publisher. Throwing Temptress this unexpected bone unleashes a latent sexuality within her and some very sexy fantasy stories, which coincidentally make for a few great scenes within the movie.

Temptress also happens to be an emotionally unfulfilled wife to a listless Devin Wolf, and through various twists and turns she ends up straying outside of her marriage and into bed with well known erotic novelist Jon Dough and his wife Anna Malle, as well as the publisher (Joel Lawrence) himself.

I know, I know. The story sounds a little cliché, a little romance-novelish, and it is, I admit it. But give a girl a break, they do it quite well. The script by Raven Touchstone goes way overboard sometimes and borders on patronising (a guy trying too hard to get into a woman’s head), but it manages to hold the story together and provides the bridge to the sex.

Bud Lee does a very good job with the directing; he captures each scene extremely well with effective camera angles and set ups, and he can take credit for the almost “dreamy” atmosphere that envelops this movie. It is like being wrapped up a in a warm comfortable blanket of sex. Lee always manages to get the most from small budgets.

Now onto the good bits.

The highlight for me is the lesbian scene between Cheyenne Silver and Monique Remoan, set on a hay cart with Dale Dabone playing the non-involved role of a photographer capturing the action. No toys, no fists, no anything other than two beautiful woman enjoying their roles and each others bodies. If I have to be honest, this is the scene which made me fall in love with this movie. I found myself fantasizing about Cheyenne many times after seeing this. Love the build up, the sensual play and the chemistry. I know some may find this scene a little on the long side, but hey, different strokes for different folks. And I used plenty of different strokes, believe me. It had me drooling over another woman for the first time; ‘nuff said.

Another highlight includes the ever vicious Anna Malle dominating the wonderfully submissive Ian Daniels, who is playing the role of a monk (obviously one of Temptress’s erotic stories!). Anyone who has seen some of Anna Malle’s work would know what to expect; this is a woman born to dominate. I usually find her extremely abrasive and have never really warmed to her, but she does a great job with this scene. Good energy, good dirty talk.

Special mention also goes to the Cheyenne/Joel Lawrence scene which features a brilliant use of mirrors, and which lays clear just why I find Cheyenne so hot. She looks amazing, and her moans and body movements are just so damned seductive.

Also, the Temptress and Jon Dough fuck scene in his study is quality too. Good passion, good energy. Both actors really get into their roles. Temptress is often criticised for a lack of conviction in her roles, but in this case there is no question that she can perform admirably. She is not “soft” here, and personally I don’t have a problem with her refusing to wear a guy’s cumshot on her face. Good on her for sticking to her guns.

Pure Bliss is a professional production, a very solid adult film that falls within the couples genre. Don’t let that put you off, however, if the concept of a couples movies generally has you running for the hills. The women are hot, the action is passionate and story is enough to add some depth and hold it all together.

OVERALL – See this for the screen-break of Cheyenne Silver, a stunningly beautifully woman who knows how to perform with passion and sensuality. Yummy!
