Placebo are known as one of the world’s great rock bands over the last decade for good reason. They deliver quality, consistent entertainment for those who love hard-hitting, though melodic, rock anthems.

“Meds” continues on this tradition. One criticism of the band is that their sound has not really evolved over the past ten years, and this album will probably support that notion. However, there is a strong case to be made for the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” argument.

I have always loved the throwback tones within Placebo music to seventies and eighties influences such as New Order and Joy Division. Coupled with uncomplicated lyrics and riffs, you know what to expect when you buy a Placebo record. To be able to survive as long as they have within the industry, they must be doing something right.

This album did not blow me away with anything new or innovative. There is no great “turn” in direction, or an over-emphasise on experimentation. A few tweaks here and there make the material fresh, which is important, but it is still Placebo - great rock, moody guitar power and Brian Molko’s unique and identifiable vocal. The slower tempo songs have depth as well, and work nicely in contrast to the rest of the album.

Highlights of the album include the hit-you-over-the head rage of “Infra Red”, and what seems to be its counter-related song, “Post Blue”. Both all time Placebo highlights. The duet with Michael Stipe (REM) on “Emotional Storm” is also one to be savoured – tones that are complex and hard to fathom, involving the listener in its chaotic arrangement.

I have to say that there are a few filler songs on “Meds”, which takes it overall rating down a notch. “Pierrot The Clown” and “Drag” I found skip-worthy…there is a little too much influence from past numbers with these songs.

Still, if you enjoy driven and dramatic rock and roll, “Meds” is definitely worth checking out. They have carved out a unique niche within the field for their sound. Placebo continue to roll along strongly!
