The Masseuse

This is a remake of the famed 1990 release of the same name, also directed by Paul Thomas, which was one of the first earlier films to blur the lines between mainstream-erotic type film and porn.

I have the original in my collection, and thoroughly enjoy it because of the unique quality of story, the emphasise on sensuality, the innovative action and the chemistry of the actors (leads were Randy Spears and Hyapatia Lee). It really was a defining point in adult film…possibly one of the first dedicated attempts to semi-mainstream the genre by incorporating the sex scenes into an interesting storyline, rather than place some poorly concocted story around sex.

So obviously the remake has some big shoes to fill. Having several of today’s hottest adult stars (including real-life-couple-at-the-time Jenna Jameson and Justin Sterling in the leads, with a guest appearance by one of my favourite stallions Evan Stone) is a great start. Bringing back Paul Thomas to direct is another positive move. Most importantly, however, is the same focus on the sensuality aspect of the story which sets it apart from most adult movies. The ingredients bode well.

Justin Sterling plays a middle-aged virgin who is awkward and shy with women. He loves internet porn, enjoys performing acts of self-bondage, and as an extension of that, has a shed full of BDSM equipment. He is not completely invisible to women…his co-worker (played by scrumptious Wendy Divine) has a little crush on him, but in accordance with his portrayal of all things geekish, Justin is not interested. Instead he seeks out some specialised, personal service from an upmarket massage parlour.

Enter sex bomb Jenna as the masseuse. Out of pity, and also thanks to a $40 tip, Justin is lucky enough to receive a handjob during their first meeting (after having a rather bizarre request satisfied first). Jenna combines a mixture of pity and attraction with this incredibly naïve fellow, whilst Justin is immediately entranced. From there, an obsession grows, before Jenna dares to enter Justin’s strange world in a fitting finale.

The story is one of escalating obsession; slow in the build, original in the premise and bursting with chemistry. It works really well because it doesn’t try to be what it isn’t; namely, an outright porno, nor a mainstream film. Instead it falls into a grey area in between…more explicit erotic than pornographic. If this film was going to work it needed an original approach, and it certainly delivers on that front.

Scripts are normally an after thought in porn, but in this case, it is actually a strength of the movie. Certainly not Oscar worthy…well, to be honest, it is a fair distance from that…but it is enough to develop the characters, plot and action. As usual, Jenna and Justin are extremely good in their roles and give a solid display of character acting.

Production values are not the best of all time either, especially when compared to films coming out of Ninn Worx for example, but they are sufficient to hold up the overall quality of the movie. I thought the sound quality was a little sketchy at times, although the soundtrack (nice mix of rock and trance-techno) was sufficient to propel the relevant emotions in each scene.

The sex scenes are extremely well done, and fit the mood of the movie to perfection. This is most definitely not a straight out and out fuck-fest. The action is varied, and includes a wonderfully done handjob, a seductive hummer, passionate lovemaking and quite a hefty does of BDSM.

Jenna is simply stunning; a true nymph personified. Everything she does screams sex appeal. Justin is also potently effective in his role as the buff nerd; his acting is actually quite believable.

Together, their chemistry sets the screen alight. I saw an interview somewhere where they were talking about making this film, and they mention they felt at times it was just like filming the sex they have at home. Being a married couple, who also happen to be top shelf porn stars, you can bet their bedroom is the scene of constant fireworks.

This is actually a double edged sword though. The obvious chemistry comes through as plain as day, including in the first scene where they are supposedly meeting for the first time. But I don’t mean to complain, these two make for incredible eye candy when they get naked and playful together.

Special mention to Wendy Divine and Evan Stone. They have a scene towards the end which is scintillating. Both are great to look at, give passionate performances, and boy do they know how to move their bodies. This is some serious grade-A fucking! Evan is always a massive stud that whets my appetite.

I loved the remake of The Masseuse. In most regards it is true to the original, except for better looking actors, with the only difference being the inclusion of some extra players rather than just the two main leads (as it was in the first movie, where Randy and Hyapatia were the only sex performers). I thought this a little curious, seeing as it was a direct remake, but I didn’t think it took anything away from the film. In fact, it added a few extra treats!

OVERALL – Definitely one for those who like some story with their sex, and appreciate a slow build rather than explosions immediately from the first scene. Sensual and seductive!
